Running head: UNCERTAINTY AND IDENTIFICATION Uncertainty, Entitativity and Group Identification

چکیده
Two studies examined the effects of self-uncertainty and ingroup entitativity on group identification. From uncertainty reduction theory (Hogg, 2000), it was hypothesized that people would identify most strongly with their group if they felt self-conceptually uncertain and the group was highly entitative. Study One was a field experiment (N = 114) in which the perceived entitativity of participants’ political party was measured, and self-uncertainty was primed (high vs. low). Study Two was a laboratory experiment (N = 89) with ad hoc non-interactive groups. Uncertainty was primed as in Study One, but perceived entitativity was manipulated. In both cases the dependent variable was a multiitem measure of group identification. The hypothesis was fully supported in both studies – participants identified more strongly when they were uncertain and the group was highly entitative. Implications of this research for the role of uncertainty and social identity in extremism, orthodoxy, and ideological belief systems are discussed.

Running Head: FORMS OF UNCERTAINTY AND PROCEDURAL FAIRNESS Being Uncertain about What? Procedural Fairness Effects as a Function of General Uncertainty and Belongingness Uncertainty
Do different forms of uncertainty account for different procedural fairness effects? We hypothesized that general uncertainty accounts for fairness judgments, whereas belongingness uncertainty accounts for group identification. Experiment 1 manipulated general versus belongingness uncertainty. Participants in the general uncertainty condition regarded the procedures as fairer when they were gra...
متن کاملGroup Based Resiliency: Contrasting the Negative Effects of Threat to the Ingroup
The research focused on Group Based Resiliency (GBR), the perception of ingroup’s ability to positively deal with contextual threats. Based on the uncertainty reduction theory, we advanced that GBR contributes to prevent negative effects of threats to the ingroup. We successfully tested a SEM in which when the ingroup is presented as resilient a contextual threat elicits a stronger perception o...
متن کاملRobust Identification of Smart Foam Using Set Mem-bership Estimation in A Model Error Modeling Frame-work
The aim of this paper is robust identification of smart foam, as an electroacoustic transducer, considering unmodeled dynamics due to nonlinearities in behaviour at low frequencies and measurement noise at high frequencies as existent uncertainties. Set membership estimation combined with model error modelling technique is used where the approach is based on worst case scenario with unknown but...
متن کاملUncertainty Measurement for Ultrasonic Sensor Fusion Using Generalized Aggregated Uncertainty Measure 1
In this paper, target differentiation based on pattern of data which are obtained by a set of two ultrasonic sensors is considered. A neural network based target classifier is applied to these data to categorize the data of each sensor. Then the results are fused together by Dempster–Shafer theory (DST) and Dezert–Smarandache theory (DSmT) to make final decision. The Generalized Aggregated Unce...

Dealing with uncertainty is one of the most critical problems in complicatedpattern recognition subjects. In this paper, we modify the structure of a useful UnsupervisedFuzzy Neural Network (UFNN) of Kwan and Cai, and compose a new FNN with 6 types offuzzy neurons and its associated self organizing supervised learning algorithm. Thisimproved five-layer feed forward Supervised Fuzzy Neural Netwo...
